ALM's LegalTech West Coast is rapidly approaching (June 24-25). The first day of the legal technology event, which will be held at the Westin Bonaventure hotel in Los Angeles, will include 19 panels on five different seminar tracks. Here is a rundown of upcoming highlights from each of those tracks during the first day of LegalTech.
Track 1: Modernizing E-Discovery Track: “Using Mobile Technology in Electronic Data Discovery,” 10:30 a.m.-11:45 a.m. Hunter McMahon, director of discovery and technology at Driven Inc., will moderate the panel, which will examine the security challenges in conducting electronic data discovery on mobile devices, among other topics. Speakers include: Ronie Schmelz, partner at Edwards Wildman Palmer; Dionne Rainey, partner at Hunton & Williams; and Richard Rushing, chief security officer at Motorola Mobility. Track 2: Data and Analytics: “Recover or Delete Dark Data? Finding a Balance between Reducing Liability and Profiting from the Information.” The 2:15 p.m.-3:30 p.m. panel focuses on dark data management and implementing data preservation and destruction policies. Maria Smith, manager of IT business analysis and training at McDermott Will & Emery will moderate the panel. Speakers include: David Stanton, litigation partner and leader of the information law and electronic discovery team at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman; Aaron Crews, shareholder and e-discovery counsel at Littler Mendelson; and Steven Shock, chief technology officer at Irell & Manella. Track 3: Advanced IT: Three industry professionals will discuss results from the International Legal Technology Association's recent technology survey and discuss trends pertaining to how law firms are using technology. “Legal Technology – Good Trends, Bad Combinations and Ugly Results,” at 10:30 a.m.-11:45 a.m., includes Jim McCue, director of information systems at Rodney, Dickason, Sloan, Akin & Robb; Dean Leung, chief information officer at Holland and Knight; and Scott Christensen, director of information services at Edwards Wildman Palmer. Track 4: The New Legal Ecosystem: At 2:15 p.m.-3:30 p.m., Tim R. Hwang, partner, Robot Robot and Hwang, and David Whelan, manager, legal information of The Law Society of Upper Canada, will address the question, "Competitor or Frenemy?" Should small firm lawyers be more like a concierge than a traditional lawyer, and actually encourage clients to use self-help tools?
Track 5: Biz Dev for the Small Firm: Speakers David Pluchinsky, partner at Beirne Maynard & Parsons, and Ramona Whitley, director of client services at Allen Matkins, will discuss assessing a firm’s data needs, sharing data internally and how to leverage existing data and information. The 12:45 p.m.-1:45 p.m. panel is longwindedly called “Competitive Intelligence – how new tools can make it easier to track big data to help your firm land clients and stay one step ahead of the competition.” Sponsored by altruik and Reputation Management Consultants
