LegalTech New York 2013
The karma gods sure must like football and legal technology, because after several weeks of downright miserable weather, Sunday could not have been better for some outdoor fun, and the little quick snow we expect Monday shouldn't significantly impact travel to or from the Big Apple.
>> Full disclosure: I'm writing this a couple hours before the Super Bowl kicks off, so congratulations to the winner. If Seattle wins, I know Donna Payne, CEO of Payne Consulting, will be very happy; and if Denver gets the hardware, John Tredennick, CEO of Catalyst Repository Systems will have bragging rights. I have to confess, the only time I have any interest in football is when Eli Manning embarrasses the Patriots, and that's just because I'm a beisbol girl and my New York Yankees passion spills over to rooting against the Red Sox' siblings. But I also happen to love the Manning brothers' wicked sense of humor. Take, for example, the best Saturday Night Live skit ever (that didn't include John Belushi.) In any case, congrats to the winners, now everybody go home (please)—it's time for LegalTech New York and we need all the hotel rooms. :)
>> Jam Packed: Every year, LTNY seems to get better, and this year's jam-packed agenda is no exception. As usual, our base camp is the Hilton, which has quietly changed its name to the New York Hilton Midtown at 53rd & 6th (aka "Avenue of the Americas" for the tourists). Here's a handy guide to the Hilton's event rooms.
The exhibit hall, which opens Tuesday at 10 a.m., will be brimming with new products and services. Be sure to check out Sean Doherty's daily reports on new and improved technologies, and his show preview here. Every day, we'll have an e-discovery "cheat sheet" to help you navigate the myriad seminars addressing electronic data discovery, and be sure to download the show guide and the app. In tandem with LegalTech New York is the 10th annual Law Firm CIO and CTO Forum. Reminder: If you want the free "Exhibit Hall Plus" pass be sure to sign up for it today; once the show starts it will cost $50. Be sure to visit our website, www.lawtechnews.com, for news from the show and helpful guides.
>> Editors & Bloggers Breakfasts: Please join us for our two annual breakfasts on Wednesday, Feb. 5 in the Petit Trianon room on the third floor. As is our tradition, the Editors Breakfast starts at 8 a.m., and runs until 9 a.m., when the event transitions into the Bloggers Breakfast (LexisNexis is hosting the Bloggers event.) Everyone is welcome to these events, no badges are required. The Editors Breakfast provides a chance to meet the Northeast-based ALM editors, and put the proverbial "name to a face." We'll have coffee, teas and pastries, and a lot of early morning energy! Likewise, the Bloggers Breakfast provides an opportunity to mingle with other legal tech bloggers.
>>LTN Innovation Awards: Another exciting event open to all, with no badges required, is our LTN Innovations Award ceremony, with a new twist this year: a free movie! On Feb. 5, we will not only present "the lucite" to our seven winners, but we'll also have a special screening of " Terms and Conditions Apply," a documentary on privacy and terms-of-service agreement, followed by a Q&A with the film's director, Cullen Hoback.
The movie, which explores how casually we surrender our privacy rights, was chosen as a "Critic's Pick" by The New York Times. Said reviewer Jeannette Catsoulis, "the content of this quietly blistering documentary should rile even the most passive viewer." Watch the movie trailers here and here.
And if you are mesmerized by the movie, and want more, you're in luck! Hoback and I will join Donna Payne and J. Trevor Hughes for the Thursday Feb. 6 keynote, also addressing security and privacy. Please join us to honor our 2013 winners. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m., the event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the New York Hilton Midtown’s West Grand Ballroom on the third floor. (You are welcome to register here.) We'll end at 7:30 sharp so you can get to your parties and dinners!
>>That's just a start! Check out www.legaltechshow.com for more information about LTNY. And remember, even veterans get overwhelmed by so much information and so many options. So check out the advice for first-time attendees and for first-time vendors. And remember to have fun!
